Plaque removal Filaments splay against the tooth for high-friction plaque disruption Wax reduces friction, so less grip on plaque Smooth surface slides over plaque rather than gripping it

Residue None Can leave wax residue between teeth None

Frequently Asked Questions

Is unwaxed floss better than waxed floss?

Both remove plaque when used correctly, but unwaxed floss like POH 490 offers more friction against the tooth surface, which many preventive dentists prefer for plaque removal. Its multi-filament nylon strands splay against the tooth, wiping plaque away rather than sliding over it. Waxed floss glides more easily but adds bulk and can leave residue. If your teeth have very tight contacts and unwaxed floss shreds, try a thin lightly waxed floss instead.

What does 490 denier mean?

Denier is a measure of thread thickness — the weight in grams of 9,000 meters of the fiber. At 490 denier, this is POH's super thin floss, designed to slip between tight-fitting teeth that standard floss can't enter comfortably. Lower denier means thinner floss.

Is POH floss PTFE-free and PFAS-free?

Yes. POH Classic 490 is made from multi-filament Nylon 6.6, not PTFE (the fluoropolymer used in "glide-style" flosses). It contains no PTFE and no wax coating.

What is the Bass Method of flossing?

The Bass Method is a technique developed by Dr. Charles C. Bass, often called the father of preventive dentistry. Instead of snapping floss straight up and down, you curve the floss into a C-shape around each tooth, slide it gently just below the gumline, and wipe upward along the tooth surface several times. Unwaxed multi-filament floss like POH 490 works best with this method because its splayed fibers grip and remove plaque at the gumline.

Was POH floss really used by astronauts?

Yes — POH dental floss was included in NASA astronaut personal hygiene kits during the Apollo era, which is where the "moon-tested" description comes from. POH has been manufactured in the USA and recommended by preventive dentists for more than 50 years.

How long does a 100-yard spool last?

Using the ADA-suggested 18 inches of floss per day, a 100-yard spool lasts about 200 days of daily flossing — roughly 2 to 5 times more floss than a typical drugstore spool of 20 to 55 yards.

Does unwaxed floss shred more easily?

Unwaxed multi-filament floss can fray on rough restorations, heavy tartar, or extremely tight contacts — the fraying is actually the fibers splaying to clean. If you experience consistent shredding at the same spot, mention it to your dentist (it can indicate a rough filling edge), or switch to a waxed floss for that area.

Excellent floss for persons wanting good friction (no wax) against teeth to remove plaque, and fine diameter to get between tight-fitting teeth.

I have been using this floss for years. My local pharmacy where I buy it no longer handles it. Therefore, I searched the internet for it and found some. Don’t want to use anything else. A toothbrush was sent along with my order and it’s the kind I’ve been looking for but have never been able to find. Definitely recommend
