Expanding floss starts thin so it can pass a tight contact, then fluffs when it meets saliva. Use it when your mouth has mixed gaps, gum recession (“black triangles”), or you want more surface area than standard waxed string. KleenTeeth stocks the few true expanding flosses still sold in the U.S., including Swiss Edel+White, GUM 2030, and Dr. Tung’s Smart Floss.
What expanding dental floss is
Expanding floss is a compressed, usually waxed multifilament. Hold it taut and it stays slim enough to slide through a contact. After it meets saliva and you ease the tension, the fibers bloom and fill a wider embrasure, recession triangle, or restoration surface. That is different from PTFE “Glide” tape (stays thin), woven ribbon floss (cloth-like from the start), and Superfloss (stiff threader + spongy section for braces and pontics).
Who it is for
- People with a mix of tight contacts and wider gaps
- Gum recession and black triangles between teeth
- Bridges and implants once the strand is already in the space
- Anyone looking for a REACH / Listerine expanding-floss replacement
- Daily flossers who want more volume than standard waxed string
Skip expanding floss, or pair it with another product, if every contact is needle-tight (use thin PTFE tape) or you need a stiff leader under braces or a pontic (use Superfloss, EasyThread, or bridge-and-implant floss).
How to use it so it actually expands
- Pull about 16–18 inches (40 cm) of floss.
- Wrap it and keep that segment taut so the fibers stay thin.
- Ease it through the contact. Do not snap it into the gum.
- Once past the contact, relax the tension and let saliva wet the fibers.
- C-shape around the tooth and sweep up and down, including slightly under the gumline.
- Advance to a clean section for the next contact.

Frequently asked questions
What is expanding dental floss?
Expanding floss is compressed and waxed on the spool so it can slip through a tight contact. After it meets saliva, the fibers fluff and fill the space. That extra volume helps clean wider gaps and recession triangles that regular string floss skips.
Is expanding floss better than regular waxed floss?
It can be, when gaps vary. Regular waxed floss keeps a fixed width. Expanding floss inserts thin, then covers more tooth surface in open embrasures. It is not automatically better for every mouth. Very tight unrestored contacts often still prefer a thin tape.
Does it work for tight teeth?
Yes for most mixed mouths, if you keep the strand taut on insertion. For extremely tight contacts, use thin tape on those teeth and expanding floss where spaces are wider.
Is it good for black triangles, bridges, or implants?
Yes once the floss is in the space. Fluffed fibers fill a recession triangle or open embrasure better than skinny string. For fixtures that need a stiff leader under a pontic or wire, use a threader-style bridge and implant floss instead.
How is this different from Superfloss or woven floss?
Superfloss has a stiff end, a spongy middle, and a regular tail. Woven floss is a cloth-like ribbon from the start. Expanding floss is a single strand that stays thin under tension and blooms with saliva. KleenTeeth carries all three types; this page is for the expanding set. See also woven floss.
What replaced REACH expanding floss?
REACH / Listerine expanding floss is discontinued. The closest in-stock options here are Edel+White Expanding Floss, GUM 2030 Expanding Floss, and Dr. Tung’s Smart Floss. Most REACH users start with Edel+White or GUM 2030.
Does expanding floss shred?
It is softer and more voluminous than PTFE tape, so sharp restoration edges can catch it. Keep it taut on insertion, avoid sawing, and switch to tape on any contact that repeatedly shreds.
How long does a spool last?
A 25 m (27.3 yd) Edel+White spool lasts several weeks of daily full-mouth use. GUM 2030 packs have more yardage. Buy extra spools if more than one person in the house uses it.
